Black Girl Biopics that MUST be produced before I'll watch this mess

Rapper 50 Cent’s former girlfriend and actress Elise Neal is set to play Karrine “Superhead” Steffans in her new biography film.

Neal told King magazine, "I just want it to be something she has a lot of control over, I would do it if it came together the right way."
Karrine “Superhead” Steffans is the author of “Confessions of a Video Vixen”.
Steffans has a past of being linked with rappers such as, Jay-Z, Diddy, Lil Wayne and Ja Rule.

There really are so many stories about us that haven't been told, especially black women.

We get left out of the coming of age stories and the triumph over adversity angles. I guess it's because so few of us are behind the camera.

Looking at Hollywood you would think we were only concerned about our fucked up relationships.

Miss Hill's book was very well written. I love the way that sister writes, although I had a problem with her bragging about her mother's family fighting for Napoleon(sp) during the Haitian revolution.

Have you read Andre Leon Talley's book, another excellent read. I read his book and Miss Hill's book together.

Thank you for this post. This is a great list and you have a great blog.

It's sad that movies like these are not made - we can learn a lot from these women.

And you're right - part of the problem is that we don't have enough black women behind the camera as filmakers, producers, directors, etc. We just have to take matters into our own hands and not depend on others to get our message across. We have to take a stand!

Thanks again sis!

I want to take it a step further and get away from the Hollywood biopic. If black women have traditionally been excluded from "fame", and Hollywood likes to make movies just about "famous" lives, then we are way more likely to be left out. The obsession with biopics is just a way to keep power and visibility in the hands of the already prominent.

I am ready to see some iconic fictional representations of black women.

Think about "people" like Forrest Gump.. not real people, but they are part of our culture.

I have recurring fantasies of writing screenplays as vehicles for Grace Jones, Nia Long, etc., playing real women, but alas, I'm not a screenwriter; I just ache to see fully dimensional black women on screen.
