Democracy at Work

I love this photo. All of these men have different backgrounds, different policies and they are all Americans. Left and right, conservative and somewhat liberal. We live in a truly great land. A truly great land.

I have to admit my seething hatred for G.W. Bush has waned over the last few weeks. I can say that I'd shake his hand if I met him. I'd wash it right after lest the mark of the beast rub off, but I'd shake it.

It is a great photo.

And I'd wash my hand, too!

What I find bothersome, and classically tragic, is Bush's inability (in today's press conference) to admit, simply, that he was wrong, on anything. "Disappointed" or "disappointment" were the closest he could get. But I suppose that is typically true for all politicians, unfortunately -- and for most of the rest of us, most of the time. God bless Obama, his family, and America, and the world. (Bush was gracious in his remarks today about Obama's family.)

I think the problem is that as citizens we cannot accept any misstep by our governing leaders. We expect them to be Gods and in turn they act like it- arrogant, unable or unwilling to make mistakes or admit them. It creates this fantastical dance where we ask to be deceived and they oblige.

If we allowed our politicians to be human, maybe he would have admitted 4,5 or even 6 years ago that staying the course is a bad idea.
